The world's most famous beach gold deposit
The beaches near Nome, Alaska, are among the world's most famous examples of beach placer gold and have produced millions of ounces of placer gold. The Seward Peninsula has produced more than 6 million ounces of placer gold, including about 4 million ounces from the Nome district alone.
Most of this gold was derived from raised beach deposits — ancient shorelines that are now elevated above the modern beach. Today, prospectors continue to work the beaches using small suction dredges just offshore.
West Coast, South Island, New Zealand
Pleistocene-Holocene beach gold placers
Research has documented Pleistocene-Holocene beach gold placers along the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where silver-bearing gold has been eroded from mountains via steep rivers and glaciers. These deposits have formed on both sides of the active Southern Alps mountain belt.
Beach placers are found on the west and south coasts of the South Island in present-day beaches, older post-glacial beach deposits, and the raised beach deposits of successive marine interglacials that underlie the remnants of coastal terraces. The Wangaloa beach gold in particular is significant as it remains the largest placer gold deposit in the region.
Oregon Coast, USA
Historical beach placer mining
Gold was found in the beach sands of Curry and Coos Counties at Gold Beach, Pistol River, Ophir, Port Orford, Cape Blanco, Bandon, Old Randolph, and South Slough. Beach placers along the Oregon coast were richly productive for a time after their discovery in 1852 and have since yielded small amounts of gold and platinum annually.
It is not difficult for the placer miner to detect gold and platinum in a gold pan from these beaches.

Glacially derived marine placers
Economic gold-bearing coastal sediment of Holocene age (10,000 years) occurs along the Gulf of Alaska coastal margin from Cape Yakataga in the west to Icy Bay in the east, a distance of 50 kilometres. Gold is recovered from discontinuous sheets of "ruby" garnet-rich beach sand exposed at low tide along the high-energy storm-dominated coastline.
The Yakataga Formation is the probable source of much of the placer gold along the shore of the Gulf of Alaska.
Bayah, West Java, Indonesia
